Day 22 –
Welcome to week four of your Miracle Of Gratitude course.
How are you getting on?
Any questions so far?
Any insights?
Any shifts you have noticed in the way you’re thinking? In the way you’re handling life? How about sharing? There’s a special discussion thread: Week Four: How are you getting on?
Today I’d like to move on to a new topic – giving gratitude for everything we consume.
What do I mean by ‘consume’? I’m talking about everything that we use or take in, in our daily lives. That can include:
- Food
- Water – drinking, washing, cleaning, bathing, gardening
- Fuel – heating our homes and fuelling our cars, buses and trains
- The internet – the many thousands of words that most of us read each day
- Newspapers & magazines
- TV & radio
And perhaps you could add a few of your own to this list? How about sharing? What do you consume each day – and how do you feel about it?
The thing is that most of us consume, consume, consume, without giving it a second thought. And not all consumption is a good idea.
Aside from any environmental impact of our consumption (though we’ll come back to that later in the week), our consumption has an impact on us.
- The food you consume impacts your health, the physiology of your body and even your emotional and mental states.
- The quality of our water impacts our health at many levels.
- The fuel we use keeps our homes warm (or cool, if you have air conditioning) and allows us to travel, but is it helping make life more complicated than it needs to be?
- Our internet surfing can take up a huge amount of ‘brain space’ and even wind us up, depending on what we’re reading.
- Newspapers and magazines directly impact the filters through which we perceive the world and the judgements and assumptions we make about others – and ourselves.
- TV and radio often run in the background, bypassing our rational filters and streaming their viewpoints straight into our unconscious mind, as well as swallowing up huge amounts of our time.
My inviation to you this week is to become a ‘Conscious Consumer’ of everything (within reason!) in life.
And to consume it with gratitude.
We’re often completely unaware of what we’re ‘consuming’. By pausing every now and then to notice what ‘goes in’, we can become more aware of its impact on us, at a deeper level, then choosing whether or not to continue to consume it.
Then, by giving gratitude for that which we consciously consume, we are connecting with that element of life at a heart-centred level, transforming our experience of it.
That might not make sense yet, but by the end of this week you’ll know what I mean with this!
So for today, I’d like to share a mind-shifting quote from Einstein:
There are only two ways to live your life. One is that nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is a miracle.
And you don’t have to be a genius to figure out which of those options we’re choosing today!
When we experience life through the filter of everything being mundane, it triggers that pesky old ‘have to’ response (remember days xxx and xxx?), where we live from the point of view of everything feeling like an obligation. In that world, we have to make evreything happen – there is no space for magic, wonder, miracles, inspiration or spontaneity.
When we choose to experience life through the filter of everything being a miracle, then imagine how that opens your heart andmind up to the wonder of life! Imagine how that might affect your relationship with others? And yourself?
Want to give it a go?
This week’s Gratitude Project guides you through turning something that we often take for granted into a deep experience of gratitude.
It’s all about food. And saying thank you for it – but in a slightly different way to the old mumbled-grace of school canteen days.
I invite you to play with it, perhaps each mealtime this week, and notice the shifts it helps you to create.
Wishing you a wonderful day!
Enkosi,
CLARE SIG IMAGE
This week’s project comes in three parts. Today’s part lays the foundations and we’ll be adding some tweaks later in the week.
So, for today, all I’m asking you to do is:
- When you sit down to eat, actually look at the food on your plate (it’s amazing how often we don’t!)
- Pause for a moment and connect with the part of you that wakes up when you do your gratitude practices.
- Look at your food and say a heart-felt ‘thank you’. Do this three times. Then start to eat.
- If this resonates for you, you might want to experiment with saying ‘thank you’ as you lift your fork and put your food in your mouth.
- This is easiest to try, the first few times, with a quiet meal, where you can be ‘present’ and give it your attention, so perhaps turn the radio or TV off and maybe even tell anyone you’re eating what you’re doing, so they will give you the space ot enjoy this experience.
That’s it for today!

Day 23 –
How did you get on with yesterday’s gratitude exercise? Did you get a chance to practice yet? How about sharing how you got on? Or perhaps asking any questions you might have? Feeling Grateful For Your Grub – How are you getting on?
Today I’d like to share with you an article I wrote a while ago about becoming a more ‘conscious consumer’ in life. I’m not talking about the stuff we buy, here. I’m talking about the stuff we ‘take in’, without realising, during a typical day.
The article is about television, but it could equally apply to radio, newspapers, the internet, magazines or other ways we ‘consume’ information and entertainment. We’re often spending hours a day on this stuff, without realising, yet it has a massive impact on our experience of life.
Playing devil’s advocate, I’m wondering how many of us would reach our final days and truly be wishing we had watched more telly? 😉
These ‘inputs’ take up so much of our time that we often feel we don’ have enough time for the things that would really make a difference in our lives. Don’t get me wrong, all of these ‘inputs’ have their place, but consuming them more ‘consciously’ and with a sense of gratitude helps shift the role they play in our lives – in a really positive way. So how about having a read?
5 Danger Signs That It’s Time For A TV Diet
There’s a special forum discussion thread, for you to share your thoughts and questions on this topic:
Is there anything you’d like to ‘consume’ more ‘consciously’?
Today I invite you to allow yourself to become more consciously aware of what you’re consuming and to feel gratitude about it.
Wishing you a wonderful day!

Day 24 –
Today I’d like to share with you a simple Chinese proverb, which helps to illustrate the power of connecting with others from the heart:
“When eating bamboo sprouts, remember the person who planted them.”
Every object in our experience of life is there because of the efforts of someone else.
In fact, most of our experiences in life, not just the objects, have been dependent on the efforts of someone else.
You wouldn’t be reading this message, if someone hadn’t helped to get your computer or phone screen in front of your eyes and if someone hadn’t helped you to learn to read, for example.
Usually that ‘someone else’ is a stranger – someone who will never meet us. Yet they gave their time and energy to do something that would help us, in some way. It doesn’t matter if they were paid for doing it. The fact is that their actions have helped us. And they did it without expectation of us saying ‘thank you’.
When you experience life from that perspective, suddenly the Universe feels like a truly kind and generous place.
And I’m curious: what have you been doing today that will impact the lives of others? How could you shift your mindset to help you to view your actions as spreading kindness and gratitude throughout your world?
How does that impact how you’re feeling, right now?
Is there anyone you’d like to say ‘thank you’ to, today?
Ready to share insights or get answers to your questions?
Here’s the Week Four Discussion area: Week Four: How’s It Going?
And today I’m inviting you to weave in an extra twist to your gratitude project – saying thank you to those who helped your food reach your plate. More details below.
Wishing you a wonderful day!

- For that ingredient, work backwards, saying thank you to each person who helped get it to your plate.
- That could include: the person who cooked the meal, the people who sold the ingredient, the people who transported the ingredient, the people who packaged it, the people who harvested it, the people who grew it, the person who sowed the seed, the person who collected the seed from last year’s harvest – the list is pretty long!
- Notice how you’re feeling about that ingredient now.
- Isn’t it amazing, how many total strangers worked together to help that ingredient to reach your plate?
- What does it feel like to live in a world where you are so supported?

Day 26 –
How are you today? Have you had a chance to play with gratitude yet?
Today I’d like to add in the final tweak for this week’s gratitude project: saying ‘thank you’ to the food itself.
Of course, this week’s gratitude project applies to so much more than just food – we can do this for anything we consume. But food is a really tangible way of experiencing it, which is why it’s what we’re starting with.
So, here goes!
Saying ‘Thank you’ to your food.
“Ok, so she’s finally gone nuts!” I hear you say! Not really…
Today is about acknowleging and appreciating the way our food supports us, the way it gives us life, gives us energy and nurtures and nourishes our body – or not, if it’s not that kind of food…
When you connect with an ingredient and genuinely thank it for nourishing you, for its life-giving and healing energies, you are doing so much more than saying ‘thank you’. You are setting an intention, at a deeply unconscious level, for this food to support and nurture you. You are aligning your energies with allowing that food to bring you radiant health. You’ll be tuning in to your body’s silent communication system, to experience what that food can do for you. Try it out (details below) and notice the shift.
I have to warn you, though. If you do this regularly, a strange thing can happen.
You won’t want to eat food that is ‘bad’ for you.
This isn’t a ‘brain’ thing. It’s a body thing. Your body knows what helps it and what harms it. And it’s different for each of us. It’s not about ‘this is good’ and ‘this is bad’. It’s about your body intuitively knowing what it needs in that moment.
So when you ‘connect’ with what you’re eating, from a place of open-hearted gratitude, you may be surprised at the messages you get. Foods you used to enjoy might become unappealing. Foods you used to hold your nose and swallow out of obligation might gradually become something you enjoy. Be open to these shifts. And the messages change over time. You’ll notice how different foods make you feel – physically, mentally and emotionally. And this insight might inspire you to change some of your food choices.
When you have played with this for a bit, please do share your experiences, insights and questions over at the forum: Feeling Grateful For Your Grub – How are you getting on?
And if you notice that some foods don’t feel great for you any more, how about checking out the 5 most common food traps that could be wrecking your mood – and what you can do about them?

How are you feeling today?
How are your gratitude projects going?
Have you found a moment for your Gratitude Exercise(s) yet?
Today I’d like to share with you a quote from Henry Miller, who was a prolific and talented writer and artist:
“The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”
That’s exactly what we’re experimenting with in this week’s Gratitude Project, except we’re using human food, rather than cow-food.
Giving your full attention – directing all of your awareness – to any one thing creates a miraculous chain reaction:
[INSERT IMAGE FROM HENRY MILLER MOG]
- It drags you out of your Monkey Mind (the chattering commentary bit!) and back into the present moment.
- It can help you instantly let go of stresses and worries.
- It helps you to reconnect with the Earth beneath your feet, rather than the illusory version of it in your mind.
- It helps you to reconnect with your heart and the “thank you” exercise this week helps you to dive deeply into gratitude.
- This week’s project combines all of that to help you access feelings of awe and wonder – both for nature and for mankind, when we send gratitude to strangers who have done things to help us; to help that object reach our existence.
So the effects are so much more than simply being able to see the object.
As Henry Miller reminds us, giving close attention to anything can allow us to access and experience feelings of awesome magnificence.
Pretty cool?
So if you haven’t had a chance to play with the Week Four Gratitude Project yet, how about giving it a go next time you eat?
And if you’ve played with it, how about trying it with a cup of tea?.
And once you have experienced elements of mystery, wonder, magnificence and awesomeness, how about sharing any insights or questions via your private forum area?
