It’s OK to get angry.

Not a message you hear very often, particularly if you’re into ‘personal development’.

But just imagine a life without emotions…

I don’t know about you, but back in the days when I was deep in the corporate rat race, I was fortunate (?) enough to be sent on any number of courses to help me learn how to suppress my emotions. This was supposed to lead me to a state of inner calm that could never be shaken, no matter how stressful things got or how much I yearned to fight the system.

Fortunately it didn’t work. Why do I say fortunately? Because emotions are such an essential part of life.

We’re all human and we all get angry at times…

It’s easy to snap at people, when we’re feeling stressed or angry. But that angry retort can cause pain and confusion and may even cause long-term damage to the relationship.

There’s an easy way to hold back, to allow more resourceful, kinder words to come out. And you don’t need a therapist to help you do it!

Whenever you feel you’re about to respond to someone angrily, simply take a deep breath in from your belly, pause for a moment, and breathe out fully through your nose. (If you do it through your mouth it can sound like a sigh which might not go down well!) As you breathe out, imagine the tension leaving your body.

By taking this deep breath, it helps you relax, can dissolve tension and will help you consider your words, rather than going with an auto-pilot angry response.
