How To Help Children To Turn Their Inner Critic Into Their Biggest Cheerleader

Clare Josa, Research & Training Director

With 1 in 8 children in the UK struggling with a diagnosable mental health condition, it's vitally important to teach them how to manage the stress, worry and anxiety that can lead to such issues. And one key factor in that is learning how to turn their inner critic into their biggest cheerleader, without white-washing or pushing down the negative emotions.

I’m thrilled that Salisbury Cathedral School has given me permission to share with you the recording of the talk I gave to their parents and teachers for Children’s Mental Health Week.

It's a training session for parents and school staff about how to help children (and grown ups) to turn their inner critic into their biggest cheerleader.

Normally my work focuses on working with business leaders and entrepreneurs, but I love getting to speak in schools and universities, because the strategies I teach can make a profound difference.

I'm passionate about teaching this stuff in schools, because the sooner in life we can help children realise they can choose which thoughts to feed - and the effect that those thoughts have on our mental and emotional wellbeing - the easier it is for them to reach their full potential at school and as adults.

My work starts with training the teachers and parents, because if we're not doing this stuff ourselves, our kids will spot it and call us out on it!

In this session, you'll learn:

  • What our inner critic is and where it comes from
  • How it affects our performance – and our emotions
  • How the inner critic affects learning for children
  • The risks of modern resilience & how to become naturally resilient
  • The ABC process to press ‘pause’ on your negative self-talk and mind-story dramas, as well as powerful emotions
  • The four-step mentoring process to take a child from super-stressed to solution-focussed, without white-washing or pushing down their emotions
  • How to create affirmations that genuinely empower children to feel confident and happy

If you’d like me to give a talk or run training on Imposter Syndrome, taming your inner critic, and how to reach your full potential, you can get in touch here for corporate events and conferences, or here for schools and universities.

I’d love to hear from you.
