In times of change, we need natural resilience - being able to naturally bounce back, when times are tough. That means not 'pushing on through' or pretending you're feeling fine. It's about being able to find that inner stillpoint, deep inside, so we can ride the emotional waves, aiming for thriving, instead of surviving.
So many of us are feeling stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. We're having to deal with emotions and actions we never imagined we would need to.
In these times, building up a natural resilience (rather than a 'push on down those emotions' type of pretend-resilience) is the key to thriving, instead of just surviving, when times are tough.
The past few decades of working on this and teaching natural resilience have shown me there are three key components to being able to bounce back - naturally and easily - when life throws us curve balls. They are:
- Being able to calm your monkey mind, so the mind-story dramas that our inner critic lives and breathes don't get out of control
- Being able to calm your body - because it feels every thought we think - and a stressed body weakens the immune system
- Being able to ride the waves of emotions that come at us, rather than drowning under them, without suppressing them.
The single best tool I have ever found for this is meditation.
And I'm not talking apps with tinkly background music and a near-constant voice.
I'm talking about being able to find that calm point, deep inside us, where those oceans of stillness are waiting for us, to support us as we ride the emotional waves of what's currently going on in the world.
But most of us are too busy or stressed to meditate. Or we think we have to make our minds go blank (big myth). Or we think it's something for 'other people' who 'aren't like us'.
