I used to live there, too. My mind used to run out of control on thoughts that made me feel stressed, worried and miserable, sapping my energy and stealing my passion.
My happiness was at the whim of my Inner Critic’s life-commentary and I was definitely feeling stressed much more often than I found myself smiling.

But I soon realised that it was easier said than done.

There's a part of your brain called the 'Reticular Activating System' and it's responsible for filtering out the sensory information that comes in, so you don't get overwhelmed by stuff like the air pressure in your left nostril. It governs what we pay attention to. And it is trained, at least in part, by the thoughts we habitually think.
So if you're usually stuck on the 'complaining train', focussing on everything that is going wrong and worrying yourself sick, that part of your brain - your 'attention filter' - is trained to let through information about things that match your general tone of thoughts. I love teaching energy-work to those of us who are traditionally more left-brained, as I was. It's so exciting to see the lightbulbs going on, when rational thinkers open up to the energy-level sensory information that is available to us, and deep-dive on learning to trust their intuition. One of the things they quickly learn is how easily you can 'sense' whether someone is thinking happy thoughts or sad / angry thoughts, even if you have your eyes closed.
Why? Because our thoughts have an energy. Scientists are now able to measure the electromagnetic field from the human heart, for example, a number of metres away from the body. And, with experienced meditators and yogis, they can measure shifts in its frequency, as a result of their daily practice.
Changing your thoughts affects each and every cell in your body, as research summarised beautifully by Dr. Bruce Lipton in his book Biology Of Belief proves. Changing your thoughts shifts your vibration - the energetic 'radio frequency' on which you operate.
And this vibration - this frequency - is magnetising. You attract that which you put out there. Have you ever noticed how an angry person is like a beacon for people who want a fight, for example?
Whilst we might not always be able to choose or control our circumstances, we can always choose how to respond. And that response is governed by the tone of the stories we tell ourselves, day-to-day.
If those habitual mind-stories are all about woe and worry, then our response to life will be in that theme. If we retrain ourselves so that our habitual mind-stories are more about what is good and what we feel thankful for, then that will create a positive shift in our response to life's brown-stuff.
These realisations were breakthroughs for me. And I felt passionate about inspiring and empowering as many people as possible to dive in and make gratitude part of their way of life.
